Beyond the Impressive Image: Developing a Filmmaker’s Eye in AI
I spent the evening at cmd + shift + create in Venice, where I had the pleasure of hosting Roundtable 2 and connecting with creators and industry professionals from different studios and disciplines, all curious about the intersection of AI and creativity.
The theme I brought to our table was “Beyond the Impressive Image: Developing a Filmmaker’s Eye in AI.”
As AI makes it faster and easier to generate impressive images, I keep coming back to a question: how much higher can we raise our standards for creativity and visual quality? From composition and lighting to production design, every choice shapes what an audience sees and feels. A striking frame is only the beginning; the deeper question is why a shot belongs in the story and what it contributes.
As the tools become more powerful, our taste, judgment, and ability to tell stories matter even more. Developing a filmmaker’s eye means learning to recognize what serves the story—and being intentional about what we keep, refine, or leave out.
It was a pleasure to meet so many new people, hear fresh perspectives, and share questions with others exploring this space. I left with plenty to think about and a renewed excitement for what we can create. Great conversations tonight!
